How to calculate sand
Tons = Cubic yards × ~1.35
Example: a 4 ft × 4 ft sandbox filled 6 inches deep is 16 × 6 ÷ 12 = 8 cubic feet = 0.30 cubic yards — about 800 lb, or 16 bags of 50 lb.
How deep should sand be?
| Project | Typical depth |
|---|---|
| Paver bedding layer | 1 in |
| Leveling under a slab or shed | 1–2 in |
| Above-ground pool base | 2 in |
| Kids' sandbox | 6–12 in |
| Beach volleyball court | 12–18 in |
Which sand do I need?
Concrete (or paver) sand is coarse and drains well — the usual choice for paver bedding and under pools. Play sand is washed and screened for sandboxes. Masonry sand is finer and used in mortar. Wet sand weighs noticeably more, so if your supplier sells by the ton, ask whether it is stockpiled outdoors.
