How to calculate gravel

Cubic yards = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27
Tons = Cubic yards × weight per cubic yard ÷ 2,000

Example: a 50 ft × 10 ft driveway at 4 inches deep is 500 × 4 ÷ 12 = 166.7 cubic feet = 6.2 cubic yards. At about 1.4 tons per cubic yard, that is roughly 8.6 tons of gravel.

How deep should gravel be?

ProjectTypical depth
Decorative top layer2 in
Garden path / walkway2–3 in
Patio or shed base4 in
Driveway (new, in layers)8–12 in total
Driveway top-up2–3 in

New driveways are usually built in layers: a base of larger crushed stone or crusher run, then a top layer of smaller gravel. Use one area per layer, or run the calculator once for each layer with its own material.

How much does gravel weigh?

Most gravel weighs 2,600–3,000 lb per cubic yard — about 1.3 to 1.5 tons. Quarries usually sell by the ton, so the calculator shows both. If your supplier gives you a different weight, choose Custom and type it in.

Frequently asked questions

How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?

About 1.4 tons on average (2,800 lb). Pea gravel and crushed stone are around 1.35 tons; road base is closer to 1.5 tons.

How much area does a ton of gravel cover?

About 115 sq ft at 2 inches deep, or about 58 sq ft at 4 inches.

How many 50 lb bags of gravel make a ton?

40 bags of 50 lb make one US ton (2,000 lb).

What gravel is best for a driveway?

A compacted base of crushed stone or crusher run, topped with 2–3 inches of #57 crushed stone or similar angular gravel. Round pea gravel shifts underfoot and under tires.
