How to calculate pavers
4 × 8 in paver = 0.222 sq ft → 4.5 pavers per sq ft
Example: a 12 ft × 16 ft patio is 192 sq ft. With 10% extra that's 211 sq ft — about 950 pavers of 4 × 8 in, or 211 of 12 × 12 in.
How much extra?
| Pattern | Extra to order |
|---|---|
| Straight / running bond, square edges | 5% |
| Basket weave, simple curves | 10% |
| Herringbone, diagonal, many curves | 10–15% |
Base and sand
A typical patio sits on about 4 inches of compacted gravel base (crusher run or similar; 6–8 inches for driveways) and a 1-inch layer of bedding sand. The calculator estimates both for your area. Use our crushed stone and sand calculators to fine-tune depths.
