How to calculate pea gravel
Tons ≈ Cubic yards × 1.35
Example: a 12 ft × 12 ft patio at 3 inches deep is 144 × 3 ÷ 12 = 36 cubic feet = 1.33 cubic yards — about 1.8 tons.
How deep should pea gravel be?
| Project | Typical depth |
|---|---|
| Decorative top layer / around plants | 2 in |
| Walkways and paths | 2–3 in |
| Patios and seating areas | 3 in |
| Dog runs | 3–4 in |
| Under play equipment | 9 in or more (see CPSC playground guidance) |
Tips
Pea gravel is round, so it rolls underfoot. Use a solid edging (steel, stone or plastic) to keep it in place, and lay landscape fabric or a thin compacted base of crushed stone underneath so it doesn't sink into the soil.
