How to calculate asphalt
Compacted hot mix asphalt weighs about 145 lb per cubic foot (about 2 tons per cubic yard). Example: a 12 ft × 50 ft driveway at 2 inches is 600 × 2 ÷ 12 = 100 cubic feet × 145 = 14,500 lb ≈ 7.3 tons.
How thick should asphalt be?
| Use | Compacted thickness |
|---|---|
| Path or walkway | 1½–2 in |
| Residential driveway (over a compacted base) | 2–3 in |
| Heavier use / parking areas | 3–4 in |
Asphalt needs a well-compacted aggregate base underneath — typically 4–8 inches of crushed stone. Use our crushed stone calculator for the base.
Frequently asked questions
How many tons of asphalt are in a cubic yard?
About 2 tons (roughly 3,900 lb) once compacted.
How much area does a ton of asphalt cover?
About 80 sq ft at 2 inches thick, or 55 sq ft at 3 inches.
How much asphalt for a 2-car driveway?
A 20 ft × 40 ft driveway at 2 inches needs about 9.7 tons; at 3 inches about 14.5 tons.
What are asphalt millings?
Ground-up recycled asphalt. They are cheaper and compact into a firm surface, but don't give the smooth finish of new hot mix.
