How to convert tons to cubic yards
Tons = Cubic yards × weight per cubic yard (lb) ÷ 2,000
There is no single conversion — it depends on how heavy the material is. A ton of mulch fills about 3 cubic yards, but a ton of gravel fills only about 0.7.

Frequently asked questions
How many cubic yards are in a ton of gravel?
About 0.71 cubic yards (a cubic yard of gravel weighs roughly 1.4 tons).
How many cubic yards are in a ton of topsoil?
About 1 cubic yard of dry topsoil; less if the soil is wet and heavy.
How many tons are in a cubic yard of sand?
About 1.35 tons for dry sand, up to 1.6 tons when wet.
Why do suppliers sell by the ton?
Quarries weigh trucks on a scale, so tons are easier to measure than volume. Ask for their weight per yard to convert exactly.
