How to calculate stepping stones
Example: a 30 ft path (360 in) with stones every 24 inches needs 360 ÷ 24 = 15 stones — or 16 if you want one right at both ends.
How far apart should stepping stones be?
Most adults walk comfortably with stones about 24 inches apart, center to center, which leaves a 4–6 inch gap between 18–20 inch stones. Walk the path and mark where your feet land to fine-tune the spacing.
Setting the stones
- Dig each spot about 1–2 inches deeper than the stone.
- Add a thin bed of sand or stone dust and level it.
- Set the stone so it sits about ½ inch above the soil or lawn, so mowers pass over it.
