How to calculate pine straw

Bales = Bed area (sq ft) × (1 + extra %) ÷ sq ft covered per bale

Example: 1,000 sq ft of beds with 5% extra is 1,050 sq ft. At about 50 sq ft per bale, you need 21 bales.

How much does a bale cover?

A typical bale covers about 40–50 sq ft at 2–3 inches deep when first laid. Freshly spread pine straw looks fluffy and settles over a few weeks, so lay it about 3 inches deep for a 2-inch finished layer. Topping up an existing layer once a year takes roughly half as much.

Pine straw vs. wood mulch

Pine straw is light, easy to spread and stays in place on slopes. It breaks down faster than wood mulch, so it usually needs refreshing every year. Compare costs with our mulch calculator.
